Gov. Gary Herbert signed legislation Friday demanding that Congress turn over roughly 30 million acres of federal land within Utah’s borders — a move that proponents acknowledge could lead to a court battle.
"It’s a difficult fight. This is the first step," said Herbert before signing the measure, "but it’s a fight worth having."

Another "sagebrush rebellion" is spreading through legislatures in Arizona and other Western states with a series of formal demands that the federal government hand over title to tens of millions of acres of forests, ranges and other public lands.
Arizona could claim as much as 25 million acres -- all federal land in the state except military bases, Indian reservations, national parks and some wilderness areas.

Uncle Sam, let’s make a deal. Utah will take over the management of the majority of the lands within its state boundaries. You can keep control over the national jewels. You can also keep the PILT payments and the SRS funds you send to the state each year to minimally compensate for lost taxes and the lack of access and development.
